Printer not printing

Six checks, starting with the most common cause. Stop as soon as it prints.

Turn on JavaScript to go through the checks one step at a time. Here they are as a list:

  1. Is the printer on?

Check that its display or lights are on, and that there is no blinking red light or error message.

  2. Is there paper, ink or toner?

The tray should be closed, the paper should lie flat, and the ink or toner should not be empty.

Careful: If paper is jammed, don’t force it out. Follow the instructions on the printer’s display, or leave it to us.

  3. Is the right printer selected?

Look at the printer name in the print window. It often defaults to “Microsoft Print to PDF” or “Save as PDF”, and in an office with several printers another one may be selected.

  4. Is the printer connected?

If it uses a cable, check that it is plugged in firmly at both ends. If it is wireless, check that it is on the same Wi‑Fi network as your computer or phone.

  5. Restart the printer and your device

Turn the printer off, wait about 30 seconds and turn it back on. Restart the computer or phone you are printing from as well.

  6. Print a test page

Most printers can print a test page from their own menu, without a computer. It tells us whether the problem is the printer itself or its connection to the computer.
